Wix Restaurants is one of the more capable restaurant website solutions I have tested, and also one of the more misleading in how it presents its free tier.

The menu design tools are genuinely polished. The setup is faster than expected. But if you come in thinking “free to install” means free to take orders, you will hit a hard wall within the first hour.

Ease of Use. The Landing Page: What Wix Promises

The Wix Restaurants landing page opens with a dark maroon hero section and a headline that reads: “Your restaurant, served online.” The subheading describes it as “an all-in-one business solution.”

Below the fold, Wix shows a demo restaurant called Molina, with a clean navigation bar already populated with links for About, Menu, Order Online, Book a Table, and Events.

That demo is doing a lot of persuasive work. It shows a complete, professional restaurant site and implies that what you are signing up for is equally complete.

The reality is more layered, and understanding the gap between that demo and what the free tier actually delivers is the most important thing this review can do for you.

The single call to action on the page is a white “Get Started” button. I clicked it.

Step One: Connecting to an Existing Site

Rather than starting from scratch, Wix asked me to select an existing site from my account.

A modal appeared with four options listed, including one called Urban Thread, which already had a premium subscription attached and was flagged with a purple PREMIUM badge.

This workflow has a real advantage that Wix does not emphasize loudly enough. If you have already built your brand’s visual identity on Wix, you do not have to rebuild from the ground up to add restaurant functionality.

You are plugging the restaurant tools into something that already looks like your business.

I selected Urban Thread and moved on. If you are starting from zero with no existing Wix site, you would go through the standard site creation process first before reaching this point. That adds time, but it is a one-time step.

Step Two: The App Market

After selecting the site, Wix did not drop me into a restaurant setup wizard. Instead, it routed me through the Wix App Market with a pre-run search for “restaurant.”

The results page returned 45 apps. The top three were:

The first thing I want you to notice is the star ratings. A 2.8 on the Orders app is low by any standard. App Market ratings on Wix tend to reflect genuine user frustration rather than misunderstanding, usually around reliability, missing features, or support gaps. I will come back to this.

I installed Wix Restaurants Orders. The installation took a few seconds, a blue progress bar confirming the process, and then the editor opened automatically.

Step Three: The Editor and the Dummy Data Advantage

This is where the setup experience genuinely impressed me.

After installation, the Wix editor did not open to a blank canvas. It opened directly onto a pre-built menu page titled “Dinner Menu,” already populated with sections, item descriptions, prices, dietary labels, and stock food photography.

The Appetizers section showed three circular food photos arranged in a grid. Each had a name, description, price, and dietary label already in place.

Below that, a Mains section listed six more items, including handmade ravioli, tofu skewers, fish of the day, peanut crusted steak, a classic burger with three variants, and schnitzel.

For a restaurant owner with no web design background, this is a significant design decision by Wix. You are not guessing what the finished product will look like. You are replacing content that already looks professional, which is a fundamentally easier task than building from nothing.

Two buttons appeared overlaid on the section in the editor: Quick Edit and Manage Menus. I clicked Manage Menus, which opened the Restaurant Menus dashboard.

Step Four: The Restaurant Menus Dashboard

The dashboard opened with two banners at the top and one pre-built menu below them. The banners advertised:

1. “Turn your file into a menu”: Convert a file into an interactive menu with AI
2. “Manage menu on the go”: Create and manage menus from your phone

Below that sat My Menus (1), showing the pre-populated Dinner Menu with 4 sections and 21 items already in place.

The left sidebar navigation showed: Catalog, then Restaurant Menus (New), then two sub-items: Menus and Items. These two views are the core of the management experience.

The AI Menu Import Feature

The “Turn your file into a menu” banner deserves its own discussion because it addresses the single biggest friction point in setting up any restaurant website: manually re-entering every item, description, price, and category from an existing menu.

The modal described the feature as beta and listed supported file formats: PNG, JPG, WEBP, CSV, and PDF.

That format coverage is broad enough to handle almost any menu a real restaurant would have on hand, whether that is a scanned image of a printed menu, an exported spreadsheet, or a PDF the designer produced years ago.

I did not test this feature in this session, so I cannot confirm how accurate the AI extraction is in practice.

What I can say is that if it works reliably, it removes what would otherwise be hours of manual data entry for a restaurant with a full menu. It is worth testing before you do anything by hand.

Step Five: Inside the Menu Editor

Clicking into the Dinner Menu revealed the full structure. The menu was divided into sections, each with a title, description, and list of items.

The Mains section description read: “A diverse range of flavorful dishes which are all sourced daily and locally.” Each item showed its name, price, and dietary icons at a glance.

A “+ Quick Add” link at the bottom of each section let me add items inline without opening a separate panel. The “+ Add Section” button at the top right let me build new sections without leaving the menu view.

When I hovered over the Classic burger row, an Edit button appeared. Clicking it opened a slide-in panel on the right side of the screen with three tabs: Info, Modifiers, and Ordering.

Info Tab

The Info tab contained:

• Item name and description (pre-filled)
• Labels for dietary flags such as vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian, with a link to create custom labels
• Pricing, with a “Set price per variant” toggle enabled. The Classic burger had three variants: Mushroom at $7.00, Chicken at $7.50, and Beef at $9.00
• An image section showing the current photo with capacity for up to 6 images per item
• Visibility toggle: Show on menu (enabled by default)
• Featured item toggle (disabled by default)

Modifiers Tab

The Modifiers tab handles structured add-ons and customizations that a customer selects at the point of ordering, things like “add cheese,” “extra sauce,” or “no onions.”

The presence of a dedicated Modifiers tab means Wix Restaurants supports structured upsells rather than just flat item listings.

I did not fully configure modifiers in this session, but the architecture is there for restaurants that need it.

Ordering Tab

The Ordering tab is where the operational depth of Wix Restaurants becomes clear, and also where I found the most important warning in the entire setup.

The tab controls:

• Stock status toggle (In stock / Out of stock)
• Tax group assignment, with a dropdown currently showing “Menu items (Default)”
• A checkbox for “Accept special requests” (checked by default)
• Item availability by fulfillment method
• Fulfillment timing settings

The per-item control available through these three tabs is more granular than I expected from a general-purpose website builder.

A restaurant that runs different menus at lunch and dinner, needs to block certain items from delivery orders, or wants to manage variant pricing for the same dish can do all of that without custom development.

Step Six: The Items Master List

Navigating to Catalog, then Items, in the left sidebar opened a flat master list of all 21 items across all menus.

This view showed a table with columns for item name, which menu it belongs to, price, labels, stock status, and image.

The stock status column had a quick dropdown directly in the table row. Expanding it showed two options: In stock (grey square) and Out of stock (red square). No need to open individual item panels to toggle availability.

This is a small feature with real daily operational value. A front-of-house manager who is not the website owner can run down this list before each service and mark items as sold out in under two minutes.

For a restaurant that runs out of the fish of the day or a seasonal special, this is the workflow that makes or breaks whether the online menu stays accurate.

The Items view also had five sub-tabs along the top: Items, Variants, Modifier Groups, Modifiers, and Labels. These give you separate management views for every component of your menu structure without having to navigate through individual items.

Step Seven: Adding a New Menu

Back on the Restaurant Menus home screen, the “+ Add New Menu” button in the top right opened a simple modal with three fields:

• Menu name (required, with placeholder text “e.g., Breakfast Menu”)
• Menu description (optional, with placeholder “e.g., Served daily between 8am-12pm.”)
• A “Mark as a draft” checkbox with an info icon

That draft checkbox is useful if you are building a seasonal or upcoming menu in advance and need it ready before it goes live.

The rest of the dialog is intentionally minimal. You name the menu, optionally describe it, and save. Everything else comes from adding sections and items afterward.

How It Looks on the Live Site

The final thing I checked was the preview mode, and this is where Wix Restaurants earns its strongest case for consideration.

The rendered menu page used a full-width layout with three large circular food photos side by side, each item displaying its name, description, dietary labels, and price clearly beneath the image.

The dark charcoal and olive background of the Urban Thread theme created strong contrast with the food photography. The dietary labels appeared cleanly below each item name. The overall result looked like a real restaurant’s website, not a template.

The three items visible in the preview were Bread and dips at $4.50 (Vegetarian), Green salad at $3.50 to $5.50 depending on size (Dairy free, Mild), and Tuna sashimi at $4.50 (Coriander). Every element was clearly legible and visually balanced.

If your goal is a menu page that looks professionally designed without hiring a designer, the output quality is genuinely there.

What Works Well

The pre-populated dummy data is the best onboarding decision Wix made with this product

Opening the editor to a working, visually complete menu rather than a blank canvas reduces the intimidation factor for non-technical restaurant owners immediately.

The live preview output is genuinely professional

The circular food photography layout with dietary labels, variant pricing, and item descriptions looks polished enough to belong on a real restaurant’s site.

The three-tab item editor organizes real complexity without overwhelming the user

The separation of Info, Modifiers, and Ordering into distinct tabs means a restaurant owner can configure dietary labels and photos in one pass, then come back to set up tax groups and fulfillment rules separately.

The quick stock toggle from the Items master list is built for actual daily operations

Marking items in or out of stock from a flat table view without opening individual edit panels is a feature that serves real service workflows, not just setup.

The AI menu import feature, if it works as described, removes the most tedious part of the setup entirely

Supporting PNG, JPG, WEBP, CSV, and PDF means a restaurant with any format of existing menu can attempt the conversion. This deserves a dedicated test before committing to manual data entry.

What Does Not Work Well

The 2.8-star rating on the Wix Restaurants Orders app is a concern that deserves honest acknowledgment. Sixty-two reviews is a small but meaningful sample, and 2.8 is low for a flagship restaurant ordering tool on the platform’s own app marketplace.

The free tier is marketed as more functional than it is. “Free to install” and “take commission-free orders” appear together in the app description, but you cannot actually take any orders without a paid plan.

Who Should Use Wix Restaurants

Use Wix Restaurants if:

• You are already on a Wix paid plan and want to add restaurant functionality without switching platforms or rebuilding your site
• You want commission-free ordering and are prepared to pay at least the Core plan rate, with the understanding that high-volume operations should factor transaction fees into the plan choice
• You have an existing menu in PDF, image, or CSV format and want to test the AI import feature before committing to manual data entry
• You need a non-technical front-of-house manager to be able to toggle item availability daily without accessing the full editor
• You want a professionally designed, visually polished menu page without hiring a designer or developer
